Who needs to have a colonoscopy?

Everyone age 50 or over should have a colonoscopy. This means both women and men, even if they do not have a family history of colon cancer. Four out of five people with colon cancer have no family history of it.

People who do have a family history of colon cancer should talk to their doctor about when they should have their first colonoscopy. Their doctor may want them to have it done before age 50.
